In her first Commonwealth Games, 16-year old Manu Bhaker won India’s first gold medal in shooting in the women’s 10m Air Pistol event.
Haryana’s Manu Bhaker not only managed to beat her experienced compatriot Heena Sidhu to the Gold, but she also finished on top of the podium with a Commonwealth Games record score of 240.9. The Bronze medal went to Australia’s Elena Galiabovitch who ended with 214.9.
Bhaker was the overwhelming apple of the eye to win the event, having bagged multiple gold medals at the 2018 ISSF World Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico and the subsequent Junior World Cup in Sydney.
The event in Mexico was also a maiden appearance for the young girl from the Jhajjar district in Haryana.
Heena Sidhu who comes from Ludhiana too did well to win silver after she was on the verge of elimination at one stage in the 10-m air pistol event at 21st Commonwealth Games being held in Gold Coast, Australia. She had also won Silver at the Delhi Games in 2010.In 2014, Sidhu became the first Indian pistol shooter to reach number one in world rankings by the International Shooting Sport Federation. In 2013, she became the first Indian pistol shooter to win a gold medal in an ISSF World Cup finals when she won the 10m Air Pistol event. In 2014, Heena was the World record holder in the 10m air pistol event with a final score of 203.8. Heena Sidhu is right handed and is right eye dominant.
