Double-Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar (74kg) has added another medal to his kitty by winning the gold medal in the 21st Commonwealth Games. Debutant Rahul Aware (57kg) added another gold medal by beating Steven Takahashi in the final of the Men’s 57kg freestyle wrestling event.
Sushil Kumar enthralled the attention of fans as he won with a 10-0 scoreline, by technical superiority against Johannes Botha of South Africa in just 80 seconds. This is Sushil’s third CWG gold following gold medals in the 66kg event in 2010 and 74kg event in 2014. Earlier, Rahul Aware won India’s maiden Gold medal in wrestling at this edition of the Commonwealth Games after defeating Canada’s Steven Takahashi 3-1 (by points) in the 57kg final. Truly it is Rahul’s persistence that earns him elusive Commonwealth gold.
Aware’s story is no different from a lot of wrestlers coming from the back of the beyond. Rahul’s father Balasaheb was a struggling wrestler, who later took up farming to support the needs of his family. The new Commonwealth winner was inspired by his father to take up the sport, his younger brother Gokul Aware said. Rahul Aware hails from taluka Patoda of Beed district of Maharashtra and the entire Patoda village erupted in celebration as they came to know that Rahul has won the first CWG gold medal of his career.
Many congratulations to Rahul Aware and Sushil Kumar for clinching gold for India at CWG 2018. Their accomplishment makes the entire nation proud.
